Once upon  a time, in Muara Kaman, East Kalimantan, existed a queendom led by a beautiful princess named Princess Aji Bedarah Putih.

She had been given her name on account of her skin tone. It was so white that when she ate betel leaves and swallowed the water, you can see the red water streamed down her throat.

In her queendom, Princess Aji Bedarah Putih was known as a smart and wise leader. The country was very prosperous. No wonder that people in Muara Kaman lived in peace and harmony.

One day, it was reported that a king from China would visit Princess Aji Bedarah Putih. The king was interested in the princess’ well known beauty. He proposed to marry the princess.

The King’s visit from China with his troops by some big jung jungs (boats) were welcomed by the princess nicely. Then a banquet with assorted delicious dishes was presented.

However, undetected by the king, that was how Princess Aji Bedarah Putih tested him. She would like to know how good the king’s attitude and manner at the banquet were.

In the middle of the event, the princess started to note the way the king ate. Seeing it took her by surprise. The king did not use his hands to eat, but swooped down directly with his mouth like an animal did. The princess took offense at the way he ate.

She was disgusted at seeing that and rejected the king’s proposal.

“I am so sorry, Your Majesty. How contemptible it was for a princess to marry someone with bad table manner,” said Princess Aji Bedarah Putih.

The princess’ remark made the king angry. He knew he was refused and insulted by the princess. He decided to go back to his jung-jung and mobilized his troops to invade the queendom of Princess Aji Bedarah Putih.

The king’s troops were strong and dreadful. The princess’ troops couldn’t keep their strength equal to that of the enemy. Knowing that, Princess Aji Bedarah Putih felt sad and panic. She tried to find a way to defeat the king and his troops.

In her hopelessness, Princess Aji Bedarah Putih remembered that there was no strenght like God’s, the creator of the universe. She prayed and asked God to protect her queendom from the king and his troops’ wickedness.

After praying, the princess chewed betel and said, “If it’s true that I am one of the royal descendants, then please turn this betel cud into centipedes that will defeat the king and his troops.

Then the princess squirted the betel cud from her mouth toward the battle. With God’s permission, the betel cud transformed into a billion big centipedes. They attacked the king and his troops. Slowly and finally they collapsed.

The King eventually ordered the troops to retreat to jung jung to survive. After the battle, Princess Aji Bedarah Putih disappeared mysteriously. The sea where the jung jung was then got shallow and changed into a land with a wide plain. The plain now is known as Danau Lipan or Lake Lipan. Today the area still exist in Muara Kaman, East Kalimantan.

*Lipan or centipedes are arthropods, some species of them can be hazardous to human because of their bite. Their body are like worms and they have a varying number of legs.
